Men and women view homeownership differently

ORLANDO, Fla. – Nov. 18, 2013 – Prudential Real Estate’s Consumer Outlook Survey for the third quarter asked questions to understand the roles men and women play as couples shop for a home.

According to the survey, men tend to take responsibility for the financial aspects of the transaction, with 39 percent insisting that researching banks and obtaining a mortgage are their jobs alone.

Meanwhile, women tend to take the helm when it comes to researching and planning, with 42 percent stating that managing appointments is their job. In addition, 34 percent of women say that it’s their sole responsibility to research neighborhoods.

Other findings

• While 87 percent of women said they like looking at homes, only 77 percent of men said the same.

• More women than men associate homeownership with a sense of accomplishment and independence, but more men than women place importance on having control over their living space and more space for their family.

• 71 percent of women and 56 percent of men view making the downpayment as a shared responsibility

• 63 percent of men and 47 percent of women believe that keeping the house ready for potential buyers is a shared responsibility.

• Both sexes cited “honest” and “knowledgeable” as the top attributes in a real estate agent, and 92 percent reported that their agent was helpful to the process.
